Duck Hunters with Disabilities Get New Blinds

Bookmark and Share

EDGEFIELD, S.C. The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and project partners are helping duck hunters with disabilities conquer the challenges of concealment by purchasing and fabricating floating duck blinds capable of accommodating wheelchair users.

Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF awarded a $13,000 matching grant to their Piedmont Chapter in South Carolina to build the blinds at Duncan Creek Wildlife Management Area in Laurens County. Additional funds provided by the United States Forest Service (USFS) and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) will be used to improve habitat, build handrails and a loading platform, and improve the parking lot.

"The USFS is proud to partner with the NWTF on this project, which will help hunters with disabilities access South Carolina's great outdoors just in time for duck season in December," said Gary Peters, wildlife program manager for Francis Marion and Sumter national forests.

Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF provides all people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors through local chapter events nationwide. Whether it is shooting, hunting, fishing or archery, there is no limit to the outdoor opportunities Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF can bring to a person with disabilities eager to get outside and participate in an active lifestyle.

"These floating blinds will help provide an exciting duck hunting experience for people with disabilities," said Illana Burkhart, Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF coordinator. "This project is another shining example of the NWTF's dedication not only to improving wildlife habitat but also to helping people enjoy the outdoors who may not be able to do so otherwise."

Partners for the project include the USFS, SCDNR, Ducks Unlimited and War Eagle Boats.

Founded in 1973, the NWTF is dedicated to the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of America's hunting heritage. The NWTF has a membership of more than 350,000 people in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
